Golf is a game where integrity is valued above all and fairness is omnipresent. Golf rules exist to help players to remain true to the game, true to their opponents and true to themselves. They do not exist as they do in most other sports to ensure competitors don't cheat. There is an important distinction there. It is utterly common to hear of a golfer competing in a major championship that has called a rules violation on himself, even though no one else could possibly have seen it. The penalty for the infraction may have caused him to lose the tournament or cost him thousands of pounds in potential prize money.
