CLUB HISTORY
West Kent Golf Club was formed in July 1916 by Wythes Estates Ltd as an amenity to the residents of Bickley Park Estate. It was set up as a propriety organisation and not a members` club. This came later.

The Directors were:

Ernest James Wythes

Sir John Thorold, BART

The Marquees of Bristol

Philip W. Dashwood.

The site of the course was adjacent to Blackbrook Lane, Bickley and is now part of the green belt, named Jubilee Park. The park behind Bromley High School for Girls separates Bickley from Petts Wood and evidence of the original course can be seen today as raised greens, tees and bunkers are still visible.

The course of West Kent Golf Club at Bickley has a setting appropriate to a club taking its title from the county, which more than other merits the description `The Garden of England`. The course was on the south eastern side of Bickley Park Estate, just over half a mile from the main line stations at Chislehurst and Bickley.

Standing 300 feet above sea level, the more open parts of the course commanded views across beautiful countryside. There were scores of picturesque corners along the fairways and holes set amongst the woods.

The clubhouse was approached from Golf Road, off Barfield Road. Today Aquilla, the Ministry of Defence establishment, stands on the site of the original building.

Construction of the course began in early 1914 but the completion was delayed for a time because of the outbreak of the first World War. The single storey clubhouse of irregular, yet striking design was very pleasant and in keeping with the character of the course. The accommodation included two large club rooms, billiards room with two tables, bar, ladies` room, changing rooms and offices. Central heating throughout produced a delightful example of what a golf clubhouse should be.

The architects were Herbert Fowler and T. Simpson who, assisted by James Braid, Designed a course ' of first class length on modern strategic plans, interesting and varied without being excessively difficult.'

The initial membership of West Kent was small, 160 Men and 80 ladies. However this quickly increased when The Orpington Golf Club on Knole Rise, closed and many of their members transferred to West Kent. The professional was Frank Roberts who joined WKGC in 1916. Being a proprietary club it was not until 1928 that members were represented on a committee and so the club`s first annual general meeting was on 1st December 1928.

The club become well known in the district attracting some of the best golfers in Kent. It became a custom for the visiting Australian cricket team to visit West Kent and, in 1934, the young Don Bradman teed off the First. McCabe, Miller, Oldfield, Fleetwood, Smith, Woodful, O`Reilly and Hassett have followed.

The old records of WKGC have not survived the club`s two moves but a factual account of the running the club exists from January 1936. The Wythes Estate board of directors were the governing body responsible for employing all the staff and maintaining the course. The captain and committee were elected by the members to carry out the day to day running of the club.
