An Island Dream!
….that is
Waterford Castle Hotel & Golf Club

The unique Waterford Castle Hotel and Golf Club is Irelands only true island golf course resort. Completely detached from the mainland and the only golf course in Ireland, Europe and possibly the World to be accessed by private ferry.

On this privately owned 320 acre island, home of the world-renowned Waterford Castle Hotel, sits a wonderful parkland golf course. Designed by Des Smyth, former Ryder Cup player and current European tour member, and opened in 1992, this 18-hole, par 72 championship golf course leads you through mature woodland and parkland. The course itself runs to 6,814 yards, off the medal tees, and covers an area of over 200 acres. The course will be lengthened during 2007 to just under 7000 yards, and further lengthened in 2008 to approximately 7200 yards.

The island was a monastic settlement in the 6th and 8th centuries, became a Danish settlement named Island Vryk (Danes Island) and during the Norman invasion in 1160 became the prison of Maurice Fitzgerald, a cousin of Strongbow. Fitzgerald was granted large tracks of land in Munster and Leinster, including the island which became his home and remained in the Fitzgerald family for 800 years. The first structure on the island was a Norman Keep which became uninhabitable by the 15th century and a Tower which forms the central part of the present Castle was built on the site of the Norman Keep. The Castle was enlarged in the mid-19th century and subsequently the East and West wings were added. Farm buildings, stable yard and staff quarters were also built at that time.

The last family to own the Island, Mary Fitzgerald, married to the Italian Prince Carracciolo, sold the Island in the 1950s to the Igoe family from Rhodesia. Later owners included the Farren Brothers and Roger Shipsey who sold the Island to Edward Kearns. The Castle was then completely refurbished and opened as a luxury hotel.

Phase two of the Islands development was the construction of the Championship golf course. Des Smyth and his associate, Declan Brannigan, were given the commission. Over 200 acres were set aside for the project and as many as possible of the old plantations were retained. Sand based greens and tees were laid and numerous bunkers added to challenge even the most competent of golfers.

Despite being completely surrounded by water the golf course has an additional four internal water features on the second, third, fourth and sixteenth holes and we can even boast of having our own Swilken Bridge. Though not built by the Roman Empire! The layout reveals attractive rolling fairways and subtle contoured greens, magnificently blended into the sensational setting of this Island Dream!
