You MUST play this course. It's owned by the local council, but don't let that put you off. It's made up of a 9 hole and 18 hole course, both are a tough test of your golfing ability.

I love the 9 hole course and play it on a regular basis. It starts of with a tough par 4 dog leg (90 degrees) right up a steep hill. You can either blast it over the trees ( a blind shot) or do what I do and take the cowards option. Go to the top of the hill and then drive the green from there. There's lots of variety and the course is improving all the time, including the addition of some nasty extra trees on the "hospital hole".

The rough can be severe on both courses and some of the slopes can send your ball rolling into trouble. All part of the fun!

You can just turn up and play the 9 holes, but at weekends, get there early 'cos it gets busy. The 18 takes bookings, but a few casuL spots are available on a first come, first served basis. The course is prone to waterlogging, they closed the course over the last couple of winters, and this has definatley improved the state of the greens.

There are two car parks, some of the regulars have an annoying habit of blocking up the top car park, to save themselves having to walk an extra 30yds from the bottom car park (like this matters, when you're gonna walk miles anyway!)

Food in the bar is good value and the breakfast is highly recommended.

First the bad news - being a municipal the greens are terrible.

BUT don't let that put you off. This is one of the most interesting courses I have ever played. Two easy short 4's to start but then the fun starts: 210yd par 3, then a twisty snaky very tough par 4 with a pond, trees. out of bounds and a steeply side-sloping fairway, then a 625 yard par 5, inc. blind shots, an uphill and a plunging downhill - one of the toughest holes ever. And so it goes on for the next 13 holes - slopes dog-legs, blind shots and hardly a dull hole.

Great views down over the town, the Crooked Spire and the railway, with the Peak District hills in the distance.

Frightning to think how outstanding a test it could be with some lengthening of the shorter 4's and first class greens.

A municipal parkland course with some fairly hard walking.
3 courses:
1 - 18 Hole, 6104 yards, S.S.S. 69.
2 - 9 Hole, 2613 yards, Par 34.
3 - Pitch & Putt course.
Pitch & Putt Green Fees, Weekdays £1.70, Weekends £2.20.

Behind railway station.
