CLUB HISTORY
Stanmore Golf Club was created by Frederick Gordon more than 100 years ago.
Gordon was a self made man. Born in 1835 in Ross-on-Wye, the eldest son of a decorator, he quickly recognised that decorating would not make him rich.
He qualified as a solicitor then moved into the hotel business, building the largest chain of hotels in the world, mostly in the UK and including five major hotels in London. His empire was worth £2 million, an enormous sum at the end of the 19th century.
His property purchases included large areas of Stanmore and he promptly built a railway line from Stanmore, through Belmont, to Harrow & Wealdstone station. A station house still stands at the junction of Gordon Avenue and Old Church Lane.
With ease of access to and from London now assured, he turned part of Bentley Priory into a luxury hotel, then began to lay out a golf course over Stanmore Park. Initially this was for the private use of his hotel guests and circle of friends but in 1893, in conjunction with his close friend Thomas Blackwell (co-founder of Crosse & Blackwell), he turned it into a private club.
In the early days there were 27 holes, a full length "men's course" and a shorter "ladies course" where the present 9th, 10th and 11th holes are situated. Over the years part of the land has been sold and developed leaving the existing 18 holes surrounding the Belmont, the hill in the centre of the course which provides such stunning views to this day.
Stanmore Golf Club is still a members club, run by members for members. Friends, visitors and members of the public are welcomed and there are two special visitors days on Mondays and Fridays.
The club actively seeks new members - interested parties can make contact and obtain more information through the Contact page.
OTHER INFORMATION
Facilities
The welcoming clubhouse at Stanmore offers well-stocked Bars, an excellent Restaurant and a full sized Snooker Table. This is in addition to golf-related facilities such as the Pro Shop and the well appointed Locker Rooms and Showers.
In fine weather the terrace overlooking the 18th green offers the chance to sink a drink whilst watching others attempting to sink a putt.
Ample car parking is available so the clubhouse is ideal, not only for day to day use by members and visitors, but also for functions large and small. The Club Secretary will gladly provide further details and costings for private functions.
Member Functions
The Club is highly active in providing activities for members and a monthly calendar of events is produced. The list is extensive but, as examples, there are regular Dinner Dances, Quizzes, Race Evenings, Wine and Beer Tastings, Bridge Evenings, and Summer Barbecues.
Stanmore is a friendly club and members are encouraged to enjoy themselves both on and off the course, taking full advantage of the facilities and participating in events and competitions.
