CLUB HISTORY
The second oldest Club in Devon, Sidmouth Golf Club has a long and distinguished history. In 1889 a group of Sidmouthians had gathered at the London Hotel to consider as to the advisability of establishing a Club for golfing purposes. Mr Thomas Kennet-Were was the first Captain, and Mr William Hastings the Secretary. The club was formally registered with the Royal and Ancient on the 16th October 1889, with 30 founding members and an annual subscription of one Guinea. The course, described as ‘the links’, initially consisted of six holes but within a year or so was increased to nine. The first recorded competition was on Friday 13th June 1889, and won by local priest Father Corbishley with a net 92. By 1904 plans were well underway for the establishment of a full 18 hole course. Designed by ex-open champion J.H.Taylor who was commissioned to supervise the layout, the course made full use of the attractive surroundings when extended to 18 holes in 1905, and Sidmouth quickly established a fine reputation among golfers in the South West.
Throughout the 20th Century and into the 21st Century the Club has developed into what you see today, and this progress has not come easy. Donations were sought and provided by members for initial costs including the erection of a Pavilion, and a new clubhouse designed by R.W. Sampson was subsequently built on the present site in 1905. Imminent closure due to lack of funds was narrowly avoided at an Extraordinary General Meeting on 12th October 1944, and in 1952 the course was sold on the death of the previous owner Colonel Balfour, with Sidmouth District Council becoming the landlord. A project to move the club to Muttersmoor in 1968 did not gain the support of the Town Council and the Club remained where it is today, carved out of the wooded slopes of the beautiful Sid Valley.
OTHER INFORMATION
There are wonderful scenes to be savoured throughout the 18 holes, and almost uniquely amongst courses on this stretch of coast, the panoramic views of Lyme Bay are enjoyed from a position sheltered from strong winds. The course offers the perfect challenge for the golfing novice as well as the more accomplished golfer. At just over 5,000 yards and with a tee yardage par of 66, visitors could be forgiven for thinking the course to be easy, but this is far from the case. Each hole provides its own challenge, and the undulating fairways and subtle borrows on the greens add to a demanding yet delightful test of golf.
