When the club was formed in May 1888, it was known as the County Club. It became the Royal County Club in 1892 when H.R.H The Duke Of York was its patron. Finally the name was changed to "The Royal Portrush Golf Club" in 1895 with H.R.H The Prince Of Wales as patron.

Royal Portrush was the venue for the first professional tournament in Iralend in 1895 and in the same year the Ladies Championsips were held.

Fred Daly, the only Irishman ever to win "The Open", in 1947 at Hoylake, was a Royal Portrush member. July 1951 saw the first Open Championship ever held in Ireland, played at Royal portrush on the course redesigned by Mr. H. S. Colt in 1947.

This the best course in the uk I believe. It kicks county down into next week(royal county down is undeniably in a stunning setting but the course falls short I believe)The course at royal portrush itself is absolutely fantastic, infact it is awesome. If you like your golf in the purest form, this is a must play. From the first hole with the two enormous bunkers awaiting your errant drive, aswell as OB left and right of the fairway you must be on your game straight away. What you see is what you get, gigantic bunkers, massive dunes, superb greens with a beautifull roll. The course unfurls itself infront of you with some seriously tough holes. The stand out holes for me were the fourth, fifth, tenth, thirteenth and the famous no. fourteen-Calamity Corner(what a par 3!!!!)
When you play here as you must do, ask the pro if you can play off the medal tees(brown stakes on the tee boxes).par 72.........
