The site on which Old Thorns stands was first documented in the 17th-Century but it was not until entrepreneur and businessman Mr Ken Wood (of Kenwood food mixer fame) bought the property in 1949 that the idea for a golf course emerged. Realising his land held all the attributes required of a great golf course he contacted Commander John Harris, Britain’s most famous golf course architect of the day, to sound out the idea and not only did Harris show great enthusiasm but he also accepted a commission as the course designer. The Commander produced the first blueprint, across 130 acres of Ken Wood’s land in 1976 but sadly he did not live to see the project sanctioned, but sanctioned it was and Peter Alliss and Dave Thomas took over the construction of the course and saw it through to completion in 1981.
The official opening of the golf course was endorsed by a competitive four-ball between Isao Aoki, Seve Ballesteros, Jack Nicklaus and reigning Open champion Bill Rogers. Aoki shot 69 to win and the individuals’ score cards were framed for posterity.
Today, Old Thorns Hotel, Golf & Country Estate offers guests and members the opportunity to play one of the most enjoyable golf courses in Hampshire with some of England’s finest views from every vantage point. The 18-hole championship course offers a challenge to any level of golfer with rolling hills, demanding water features and choice of four tee positions – and the views really are spectacular.
The hotel has retained much of its original charm, and has recently embraced the old with the new with a significant development programme not only on the golf course but also in the hotel itself. This programme has seen all the fairway bunkers reconstructed, new bunkers introduced and the irrigation and drainage systems upgraded ensuring excellent playing conditions even during the winter. The back of the 18th green has been redesigned and the Pro-shop has been completely re-modelled.
Within the hotel, the accommodation has been upgraded to a superior 4-star standard, Greenview, the hotel’s popular restaurant, offers a wide range of cuisine and has a roof terrace offering al fresco dining and stunning views of the golf course.

I have just come back from Old Thorns where 40 players from my society the MBB played the course for 3 days. I have to say I have never met a more ignorant, unhelpful, unfriendly set of people that inhabit the golf shop. The attitude of these people left a great deal to be desired. I will never go back to Old Thorns and I will ensure that any golfer I meet will be aware of my feelings towards the so called 'professionals' at Old Thorns.

Situated in a 400 acre estate on the Hampshire / Surrey border, Old Thorns is in ideal golf country. Designers Dave Thomas and Peter Alliss have laid out a Championship standard course which affords low handicappers a real challenge while sill being sympathetic to less proficient players. The elevated positions of many of the holes offer spectaculaviews across the glorious Hampshire countryide
The course is studded with mature trees and water comes into play on some holes, but even if you’re not playing brilliant golf, Old Thorns is well worth a visit.
Originally a 17th century farmhouse and now a cosy 33 bedroom hotel with a contemporary restaurant and bar that retains much of its original charm, Old Thorns offers the idyllic setting for any occasion from a relaxing weekend in the country, residential conference or corporate event to that special anniversary, wedding or civil partnership.
Our Health Club has something for everyone, whether you choose to pamper yourself with an indulgent beauty treatment, enjoy a stimulating work out or simply to relax by the pool.
With easy access by road, air or rail, Old Thorns is simply the perfect country retreat.
