Okehampton Golf Club has been a members` club since its beginning
in 1913. A previous attempt to start a Club on 21st May 1901, on ground
that proved 'too difficult of access' was wound up in 1904.<P>
The present course was designed by J H Taylor on parkland leased to
Okehampton Golf Club Ltd, was of nine hole format and opened in July 1913.
In 1921 it was extended to 18 holes, its current size and style..<P>
The ex Open Champions, J H Taylor and Alex Herd formally opened the course
with the comments 'the site is one of the most beautiful they had ever
seen; it afforded a most thorough test of golf, no two holes being alike.'
Thank goodness these statements are as true today as then..<P>
The welcome for golfers at this great little course (it is just 5234yds
from competition tees) is assured although Saturdays are not usually
available, being set aside for Club Competitions. High standards,
wholesome country food is available, and the licensed bar serves a
splendid real ale amongst others. Telephone booking for tee times is
advisable in summer months..<P>
