REVIEW OF MAHEE ISLAND GOLF CLUB

I played this lovely 9-hole course during a short holiday break in September 2002. On my arrival I was made most welcome. A past captain even escorted me to the 1st tee to explain how to play the course! This is a very scenic course - Strangford Lough is visible from every hole. The first 3 holes are shortish par 4's, but the undulating nature of the terrain makes them a good challenge. The 1st requires a drive down the left hand side to allow for the severe slope of the fairway. The 4th and 6th holes are interesting downhill right hand dog-legs with the greens hidden from the tees. The 5th is a long uphill par 4, requiring a blind 2nd shot for all but the longest hitters. A bad slice off the 7th tee may end up in the lough, but even a good drive requires a very long 2nd shot to this long uphill par 4. For most amateur golfers this is really a par 5. Hole 8 is a delightful downhill short par 3, where club selection is all important. The 9th is an uphill left dog-leg par 4, requiring a 2nd shot to be hit over a line of trees to find the green. This used to be a straight hole, with the green beside the clubhouse. I am told, however, that errant shots sometimes endangered the safety of people having a (soft) drink on the patio outside the club house, or damaged cars beyond it. The club is understanderbly 'dry' due to the torcherous narrow road leading to and from it. However, the club has a good selection of cold drinks from the fridge. This course is a hidden gem, and referred to by a member as 'a heaven which few people know about'. The course is also wel maintained, and the green fees are very reasonable. This was the best day of my holiday (don't tell my wife!).

OTHER INFORMATION
Undulating parkland on an island in Strangford Lough. Magnificent views in every direction. A tough par of 68. Fred Daly 1947 Open Champion, was the club's first professional.
