CLUB HISTORY
Founded in 1893, the golf club at Long Ashton started its life as a nine hole course, however this was all to change by 1905 when a further addition of land provided the stepping stone to adjoin the second nine holes. Situated just three miles west from the city centre the course of two halves shares scenery looking out over the city combined with an excellent easterly view over Dundry Hill and the Mendips.
<P>
Following an array of re-designs the famous partnership of Hawtry and Taylor were commissioned in 1937 to advise and plan a course which in the main is still played today. However it was not until 1957 when the club eventually purchased the land, which in its earlier years had formed part of the Ashton Court estate. Recent additions in 1966 provided the acquisition of a 12-acre site, which is now regarded as one of the best practice facilities in this part of the country.
<P>
The club has staged several major golf tournaments. Notably The Martini International Tournament in 1966 won jointly by Peter Allis and Bill Large and the Coca-Cola Young Professionals in 1972 won by Peter Oosterhuis. In the last decade the English Boys and British Ladies tournaments have also taken place.
<P>
Amongst the club`s more famous golfers included is Ruth Porter - English Ladies Amateur Champion 1959 to 1961 and 1965, Kirtrina Douglas - Ladies British Open Amateur Champion in 1982, also internationals Andrew Sherborne and David Ray.
<P>
Today Long Ashton enjoys a membership of some 800 members with healthy junior and ladies sections, yet there is always a welcome for visitors and is regarded as a club in which you will always receive a warm welcome.
GOLF CLUB REVIEWS

02/09/2003 - Sent by Spencer Robinson
  Impressive 18 hole golf course offers breathtaking views over Bristol as well as a strong test of golf for players of all abilities. Spread out over a mixture of moor and parkland, the tree lined fairways make up for the relatively short length of the course. Take plenty of golf balls for when you lose them on the challenging 4th and 6th holes.

OTHER INFORMATION
Wooded parkland. 18 holes, 6400 yards. S.S.S. 71. Practice ground
