Played the course in November - course very wet but still a good test even under winter rules and off the yellow tees. One of myfavoutite courses, this is a technically demanding course for anyone wanting a low score - 10 dog-legs -and you need to be able to draw and fade the ball off the tee, thru the fairway, and hit it over (or round ) high trees. A great opening hole - do you go for the green or play safe? 3rd needs a big draw off the tee as does the 15th and then a high shot over trees to a well defended green. The par 5 ( 550 yds ) requires straight long hitting to stay on the open wind-blown linksy fairway. 14th ( SI 1) requires a shaped drive ( one of several) and an accurate second. Good run of closing holes where a birdie is possible but a lost ball the penalty for wayward drives. It demands accuracy as well as length and every hole is different. This course is one I favour - rough and ready heathland fairways with punishing rough- hard runninglinksland in summer - not the modern manicured-lawn layouts that are all so easy, boring and repetitive. Who needs bunkers when there are this many natural hazards? Wind comes into play on some holes needing low penetrating shots. Here you have to work the ball and take it cleanly off the tight fairway grass, playing chip and run and all variety of shots - a true test of golf along the lines of Frilford Heath ( where I was a member for some years.) On nearly every hole you have to stop and think" what am I going to do here and how am I going to do it?" I hope they don't ponsify the course and spoil it. A bit of work on the tees yes, but don't cut back the scrub or relay with country manor garden turf. Next time I'm going to play it with hickories to set up a hickory club course record - now there's a challenge.
