CLUB HISTORY
Hesketh Golf Club
Golf was first played in Southport by Southport Golf Club on these "Marshside Links" from 1885. In 1892 the Club migrated inland to a new Course, which it created at Moss Lane (now the Old Links). The original Marshside Course was left to nature and the natives of Little Ireland who had proved to be unwelcome neighbours. Later, after the nuisance of Little Ireland had been removed, a new young landowner, Charles Hesketh Bibby Fleetwood-Hesketh, laid out a Course, which included the ground of the original links. He successfully invited the Southport Golf Club to return to its roots and adopt the title of "The Hesketh Golf Club".

Situated on a tall sand dune the Clubhouse, which he had built, rose majestically above the Course. This building, which dominated the south bank of the Ribble estuary, was described as being of "manor house proportions". Its black timbers contrasted sharply with the white plaster of the mock Tudor façade; whilst the bright red tiles of the steeply pitched roof and tall central clock tower capped a truly striking landmark.

This magnificently appointed building, with accommodation for 400 members, was opened, along with the course on the 1st October 1902, by William McInroy, Laird of Lude, a Scot who had married into the Hesketh family.
GOLF CLUB REVIEWS

28/07/2009 - Sent by Mike Schofield
A group of twelve of us (handicaps ranging from 26 down to 6) played Hesketh in March this year. Without exception, we all had a great day. The course was a fair test, in good condition and very picturesque. As a bonus, the weather was superb too. Two or three newly built greens were so new that unfortunately we didn't get to play them. They were, however, just another reason for wanting to return. Besides the golf, we were warmly welcomed by the club and it's members, enjoying a good lunch in a lovely clubhouse before heading home. We will be going back however. I can only apologise for not having posted this review earlier - it's been something I've been meaning to get round to for a while. I just hope this review has done the place justice.

OTHER INFORMATION
Set amidst the towering Victorian villas of Southport’s premier residential area – Hesketh Park – is the Hesketh Golf Club, the town’s oldest golf club, founded in 1885. Standing alone on the crest of a tall sandhill, the clubhouse dominates the golf course, and the surrounding district. The course is at the northern end of southwest Lancashire’s sand dune system, which is the home of so many great golf courses. Professional championship golf has been played on these famous old links from the club’s earliest days, and the course is regularly used as a final qualifying course when The Open is played at Royal Birkdale.

The course sets a unique challenge with half of the holes threaded through tall sand dunes; whilst the other holes border the Ribble estuary. Here the course`s neighbour is a nationally renowned bird reserve, where winter visitors are rewarded by seeing great flocks of migrant geese, swans and waders. Across the estuary the mountains of Lancashire, Cumbria and Yorkshire provide an unforgettable backdrop.

The ambience in the clubhouse and on the course is that of a traditional town golf club. The English Golf Union has its roots in the Hesketh Golf Club. The initiative to form the Union came from a former Hesketh Captain, who became the Union’s first president. The Club’s two most famous members were the Bentley brothers - Harry and Arnold – who were possibly the most illustrious pair of brothers in the history of amateur golf. Significantly, as boys, they could have driven a golf ball from their garden or their school playground onto the Hesketh course.

The drive up to the clubhouse is alongside a short hole that Henry Cotton described as the best short hole in Lancashire. What is beyond doubt is that emerging from Southport’s urban landscape and driving alongside this picturesque hole to approach the clubhouse, will fill a visitor with anticipation at the prospect of playing on these fine links. The Club is renowned for its friendly welcome of visitors.
