Hazel Grove Golf Club was founded in 1913, its modest first site being some rented farmers fields at Bosden, Hazel Grove.

Following a short tenancy, the members found on alternative site at Mill Hill in Hazel Grove and twelve months later another move was made, this time to the present course at High Lane.

It was then that the club started to establish itself and the membership grew accordingly.

The early 1920s was a significant time in the clubs history as finances were raised and the club embarked on the improvement and preconstruction of the course by none other than Mackenzie & Nicholson Golf Course Contractors.

As history shows, Dr. Mackenzie, pictured here, proved to be one of the great golf course architects of our time and is responsible for designing many world famous courses, including Augusta National and Cypress Point. Hazel Grove is indeed in very good company!

The next major work to be carried out on the course took place in 1990 when plans for the infamous A6 Bypass resulted in the compulsory purchase of a section of the old course which to this day remains unused. However, this land continues to be maintained by the greens staff as if it were still part of the course and makes an excellent practice area.

New land was acquired and the course redesigned along with a complete refurbishment of the clubhouse and its facilities.

However the greatest feature of the new course is probably the greens, having all been relaid to USGA standards. Not only does the club arguably possess the best greens in the region, but members and guests can also enjoy playing on them for twelve months of the year without a temporary green in sight.

With 2013 Centenary planning well on its way, the beautiful and well-appointed Alister MacKenzie parkland course at Hazel Grove Golf Club in Cheshire, is characterised by several natural water hazards. Add to these the planting of a further 6,500 trees to supplement the existing ones and you can understand why careful course management is required by golfers of all levels.

The course has a number of feature holes each presenting its own individual MacKenzie challenge.

The par 5 third is as testing as any and ranks amongst the best in Cheshire, while the best of the par 3's is arguably the eleventh, both for its degree of difficulty and picturesque layout.

Equally, the eighteenth finishing hole with its MacKenzie tiered green and backdrop of the chalet-style clubhouse ranks with the best on the course.

With so many outstanding holes, it's hard to highlight any one as a 'signature' hole. However, the fifteenth, dominated by a large sweeping lake, which runs along the left hand edge of the fairway, and across the front and down the left of the green, must take the honour. At 285 yards, this par 4 represents the ultimate risk or reward hole.

From the elevated tee the green always seems within reach with a well struck drive, but your mind is then further concentrated by the out of bounds which runs along the right edge of the fairway. The decision is yours - lay up, or take on the green?

Golfers who enjoy and appreciate the challenge of MacKenzie Courses will love the welcome they get at Hazel Grove and we trust they will leave saying "Golf in Cheshire just doesn't get any better than this!"

Lots of special offers are always available on the visitors section of the website http://www.hazelgrovegolfclub.co.uk

If you live in Manchester or Cheshire and visit clubs with golf societies and club teams and you haven't been to Hazel Grove Golf Club, then you are missing one of the "Hidden Gems of Cheshire" Its not the longest course you'll ever play and its not a ridiculously difficult course for society players. what Hazel Grove delivers is a great test of golf for all levels on a superb course.

Situated around a number of small streams, rivers and lakes, the course is not known a particularly hilly course, however there are lots of undulating fairways to catch and slow up the big hitters. Hazel Grove Golf Club is recognised in the area for having probably the best USGA greens that can be harder to read than "War & Peace!"

Whatever the occasion is to visit this Alisair Mckenzie designed course at Hazel Grove, you will always be greeted by a friendly team, great golf, an excellently tended course and most importantly a good 19th hole and restaurant.

take a look at the website and book a day out, you wont be disappointed.

The Swiss chalet style clubhouse, built in 1990, provides the perfect atmosphere in which to relax after your round.

Theres a spacious lounge bar, members bar with snooker and card tables, spike bar which overlooks the 18th green and first fairway, and large balcony, ideal during the summer months for sitting out and watching players complete their rounds.

The restaurant offers an extensive selection of freshly prepared dishes to suit all tastes and occasions. From a la carte to delicious snacks, breakfasts to light lunches, tasty hot or cold buffets to carveries, the Head Chef and his team are vastly experienced and have established an excellent reputation for creating food of the highest standard.

Throughout the year many special events are held at the club, including gourmet evenings, cabaret nights, social events and private functions.

Our friendly and helpful staff are always on hand to make sure that your final hole, the nineteenth, is just as enjoyable as the eighteen you play on the course!

Hazel Grove Golf Club - Stockport In the past, being a member of a golf club was perceived as a sign of wealth and opulence, a message to others that you were above them on the social ladder and that you were somehow privileged.

Not any more.

How times have changed. The worldwide media exposure of the game has delivered almost every professional tournament into our living rooms and has popularised golf like never before. It has brought us heroes (and villains) of both sexes, all ages and ethnic backgrounds.

The welcome onset of sexual equality has also had its influence. Golf clubs have changed from stuffy old boys clubs into vibrant social venues where people from all walks of life meet and play golf, and socialise together.

Golf is also a brilliant way to exercise and keep fit. It can be played by people of pretty much any age and the handicap system ensures that everybody can compete.

Best of all, its very affordable and very cost-effective.

with a host of different new member offers available to join this top club, joining Hazel Grove Golf Club and playing just one round per week, youll find the cost is just fractionally more than that of a pay and play course. A small price to pay for playing every week on beautiful USGA greens, always from the fairways without a mat or temporary green in sight.

The only concession? During the winter months astroturf tees are in operation, but with the look and feel of grass (you can even use normal tee pegs) youll hardly notice the difference.

And dont forget, you get to use the magnificent facilities of the clubhouse as well!
