The Glamorganshire - founded in 1890, the fourth oldest club in Wales - is steeped in history.

It was here in September 1898 that the Stableford scoring system was first tried by its creator, Dr. Frank Stableford then a member of The Glamorganshire.

In recent years the clubhouse has been completely re-developed and offers excellent dining and changing room facilities. There have also been numerous improvements to the golf course.

Although the first golf clubs to be formed in Wales were at Tenby (1888), Rhyl (March 1890) and Caernarvonshire (June 1890), it was The Glamorganshire Golf Club which first introduced the game into the heavily populated and industrialised south east of Wales in October 1890.

The Minutes of the Meeting on October 20, 1890The first steps were taken at a public meeting held at the Jubilee Hall, Penarth, on October 20th, 1890, the declared purpose of which was "to consider the advisability of forming a golf club". Lord Windsors agent had promised his Lordships assistance in providing the necessary land in the form of a few rough fields which those acquainted with the game considered very suitable.

Lord WindsorIn 1890 Lord Windsor - who subsequently (in 1905) was created Earl of Plymouth - gifted the plot of land in Lower Penarth and the Club was founded initially as a nine hole course.

The Club undertook an expansion programme to the full eighteen hole course during 1896 and the following year, enabling the 1897 Welsh Amateur Championship to take place in Penarth for the first time.

The par 70, 6,184 yard golf course, enjoying stunning views over the sea, is not actually a links, but an 18-hole parkland course on undulating ground at the eastern edge of Cosmeston Lakes Country Park. With narrow wood-lined fairways, well-guarded greens, water hazards and over eighty strategic bunkers, it offers a stern but fair test to golfers at all levels.

The town of Penarth lies on the north shore of the Severn Estuary on Cardiff Bay, just 5 miles (9 kms) from the Welsh capital city of Cardiff. Only 25 miles (40 kms) away by motorway is The Celtic Manor Resort, which was the venue for the 2010 Ryder Cup.

For many years now, Penarth, with its traditional seafront and extensive surviving Victorian and Edwardian architecture, has been a highly popular holiday destination, promoted internationally as The Garden by the Sea. The town continues to be an excellent base for the many tourist attractions in and around Cardiff and South Wales.

You can be assured of a warm, Welsh welcome at The Glamorganshire Golf Club, Penarth.
