A Potted History of Formby Golf Club

The arrival of the recently extended railway to Southport (1851) created the opportunity for the development of all the golf courses along this coast. Formby lay between it and the sand hills and followed the pattern of golf course design created at St Andrews and Westward Ho! and the earliest local course of West Lancashire (1873).

The history of Formby Golf Club dates back to 11th December 1884 when the Club was founded. At that time, the links comprised 9 holes and opened only from 1st October to mid April each year. Membership was limited to 25 local residents at the rate of 1 guinea (£1.05p) per season. The land was rented from a tenant farmer at £10 per season. The course extended to 18 holes, under the guidance of Willie Park, at the turn of the 20th Century.

The original clubhouse was destroyed by fire in 1900 and rebuilt in 1904. The Clubhouse was extended in 1998. The clubhouse has dormy accommodation for 10 guests.

Today, 700 members enjoy the game in surroundings bestowed upon them by men of vision.

FGC is unique in that there is a separate Ladies club established in 1896. They have their own golf course and clubhouse. You will see the course in the middle of the men’s course and the clubhouse on your right as you pass to the 1st Tee.

FGC also has a Hippo in the Golfers Bar. Its wartime exploits are detailed on a plaque adjacent to the hippo!

Golf Course:

The course is set amongst dune land, heath land and woodland in an estate of about 470 acres and is a site of special scientific interest. It is an area of great importance to nature conservationists. An ecology booklet was published in 2006 contained a hole by hole guide to its wildlife and conservation. The course features fast seaside greens, 83 natural sand bunkers and surrounds the area of the property occupied by Formby Ladies’ Golf Club.

In 1972, erosion of the shoreline required the creation of new holes at 7, 8 & 9 and a new 10th Tee playing to the existing 10th Green turning this into a short hole. These holes came into play in the early 80’s and were used for the 1984 Amateur Championship.

In recent years, to reflect the improvement in golfing equipment, there have been modifications to the course and in 1998 new back tees were built, extending the length to over 7000 yards (SSS 74) but, more importantly bringing back into play, for the low handicap golfer, most of the original drive-length bunkers.

Apart from minor alterations of a tweaking nature little has changed until the construction of a Practice Ground, short practice area and new 14th Hole in 2005.
There are four different teeing areas: Blue (7028 yds); White (6698 yds); Yellow
(6505 yds) all par 72 and Red (6060 yds) par 70. The Red Tees indicate the FGC
Short Course.

Formby is recognised as a true amateurs’ course. It has held 3 Amateur Championships, numerous R & A Championships for Boys, Mid-Amateurs and Seniors and has hosted many EGU and County Championships.
Additionally we have hosted 6 Lancashire and 10 Lancashire Ladies Championships and 7 Oxford v Cambridge Matches.
In 2008 we are hosting the Lancashire County Championships.

In 2009 the Amateur Championship returns to Formby in our 125th year.

However the course has not always been used exclusively for men’s events. The LGU has visited Formby on many occasions, as have The English Ladies’ Golf Association, The English Ladies’ Seniors GA and the Lancashire Ladies County GA. Formby was chosen by the European Golf Association to host the Ladies’ International European Amateur Championship in 1997, the first time this championship had been held in the UK.

In 2004, Formby was selected to host the 33rd Curtis Cup match between the amateur ladies of the USA and GB&I. This match, won by the USA team, gathered some 20,000 people over the links in 3 days with 8500 spectators on the last day.
