Three friends and I are about to embark on a two-night, three-day, break here for the third consecutive year. That surely speaks for itself. Yes, the fairways are generally narrow, and the course challenging, but it is well kept and we have always enjoyed our golf. The hotel rooms, whilst being rather basic, are fine. The staff are friendly in both the hotel and the pro shop. The food is very good and the whole experience is good value, even down to the "free" beer in the evenings. I have already decided that, whilst we are there next week, I am going to book again for later this year to introduce a different group of friends to the course.

Four of us have just returned from a 4 day stay at Farthingstone Golf Course, we all enjoyed our stay. The staff were friendly, the rooms clean and the food top class. The course although narrow in places was well maintained, the greens were true and fast, in fact the course was an enjoyable challenge. We would recommend it as a most enjoyable break.

Do not waste your time! Greens are awful and the fairways are so narrow that people are playing 2/3 fairways across each other.
We were advised on the phone that they take 241 but in fact they only accept from day rate so its not 241. The worst golf course i have EVER played.

We (16)stayed at golf club for two nights and played golf on three days and we have re booked for next year, course in good condition (greens ok), hospitaltiy very good and club house very relaxed and comfortable. Would recommend a visit.

Played recently during the dry spell and the course held up very well. Friendly well stocked club shop, pleasant members, well maintained and plenty of greenkeepers about keeping the place up to scratch (pretty impressive for a Thursday).

It is a tight course but the rough is forgiving to make up for this, and is certainly not dangerous (as quoted in a previous review). I think there has been some new investment with new bar and club house facilities.

All in all well worth a visit, recommended.

I completely agree with Laura's review, below. The course is dangerous, with balls landing around you from all angles. I heard more shouts of fore whilst standing on the first tee at Farthingstone than I have heard in many years.

The blame has to lie with the course designer. There is space for 9 decent holes, not 18. The fairways have little or no rough and are separated by a thin line of fairly small trees. The tees are either directly adjacent to the greens or located alongside fairways at driving distance. The greens are interesting and well kept, but the place is depressing.

Do not waste your time. We walked off after 5 holes and went elsewhere.

I have played this course a few times and have always enjoyed it. The course is varied and in good condition, with the greens being faster this year than I remember from previous years. The atmosphere out on the course is friendly with other golfers being quite tolerant of even my golf! There are plenty of buggies available, a couple of practice nets and there is shortly to be a driving range as well.

The bar is a decent size and you can relax and watch sky sports on a plasma screen at the end of your round. In summary this is a friendly, challenging and varied course which has improved in condition over recent years, represents good value and I recommended it.

Played this course recently as part of a society day. I had been there in the past and was delighted to see how pleasant the place wa still. The entire crew had a wonderful day, which included some good golf, but even better hospitality. Our evening meal was excellent, and we will certainly make more regular visits.

An excellent course. We were delighted as to how homely the place felt. The golf course was quite challenging, but the beauty of the place was outstanding.
The food was very nice, this was also complimented by the atmosphere in the club house.
I would recommend this to other golfers, and i'll certainly go back there myself.

We had been looking forward to playing this course for a long time as we had seen it widely advertised. We booked in as a fourball under the 2-fore-1 scheme at a cost of 17.50 each (for a Sunday).

However, we could not have been more disappointed. We should have realised that something wasn't right, when we turned up and the main entrance looked like the back entrance to a farm. The car-park was full mind, which we took to be a better sign.

The changing rooms were not 'luxurious' as quoted in their literature and the lockers (if you could find one to use that wasn't broken or full of junk) were 1 (non-refundable for each time you opened and closed it).

However, not to be deterred, we signed in at the pro-shop (even though there is no Pro) and had a cup of coffee in the very dated and unkempt bar. All staff were, at most in their early twenties, which, although not a problem in itself, were obvisouly there only because they are cheap to emply and not becasue of their knowledge or management skills.

Nevertheless, as we had travelled some two hours to get there, we decided to let the course speak for iteself.....

It took 1 hour 15 mins to play the first four holes. The fairways are extremely narrow and although, we had no problem with that, it seemed that everyone else did. After just one hole, we had heard 7 cries of Fore! During our round, we had to wait for players from several other holes who were off target (some having carried across two fairways).

In addition, the condition of the course was appalling, and we have played some poor courses. The fairways were bone dry (we can live with that), but were overgrown and in desperate need of cutting, as were the tee boxes and greens. The fourth green was on the move where it was so boggy, and the ground generally was very sour with thousands of flies, inlcuding horse flies everywhere.

The whole Club and course reeked of 'receivership' and desperately needed a lot of investment and tlc. Had we stayed at the Hotel we would have been even more disappointed. It is the only course we have walked off - the reasons being a) the flies and b) it was too dangerous, with balls flying left and right but definately not centre.

The condition and speed of play, although disappointing, would not have persuaded us to walk off after only 4 holes, espceillay after having travelled so far to get there.

I wanted to let others know that the brochures and literature that we all see advertised, does not give a true refelection of the club and does not offer value for money, when there are many more places worth playing. If you do decide to play there, don't go with high expectations.

The golf club was first opened in 1973, originally comprising of only 9 holes the golf course has developed over the years to the full 18holes that we have here today. Accompanying the 18 hole golf course there is also a 16 room en-suite hotel based on site, along with two snooker tables, a squash court and pool table. All in all the facilities along with the well stocked bar with local real ales and fantastic food make this an ideal club to arrange a golf break stay in the hotel at.
