Founded in 1894 as a 9 hole course - planned by William Lowe to 12 holes and in 1906 extended to 18 holes by James Braid. The name Chevin dates back to Iron Age Celtic days meaning high bare ridge. Roman legionnaires, encamped on the site of Duffield Castle, used the ancient road to carry lead and silver along a ridge from the Wirksworth mines which lie to the north west. This road you will cross on the 7th hole and then it runs to the left of the 8th fairway and right of the 9th and 10th fairways. Court House Farm situated adjacent to the 14th and 15th holes was used as a manorial court where public hangings took place, the 13th holes being aptly named "THE GIBBET" The 7th hole - named "THE TOWER" was built by railway engineers in 1897 for the sighting of the tunnel that runs under the course and is evident by air holes to the left of the 4th green, back of 6th green and actually on the 16th tee - trains running from London/Derby to Sheffield constantly use this line alongside the 1st fairway - and on special ocassions Steam Trains can be viewed in all their glory ! Just remember, if your ball was missing on the further reaches of the course, in 1922 police were employed on the Sabbath to apprehend thieves stealing golf balls. Today however, there is no local rule to cover this !

Played this course today and managed to avoid the rain! Fabulous condition, all summer greens even in February - very impressive.

The course was quite challenging and I had to stop for oxygen as I approached the 9th green! Tribulation was as tough as I have heard it is, I missed the fairway and ended up down the hill in the rough - took me two to get back on the fairway.

My group stayed for a meal afterwards and the food was excellent. All in all, a brilliant day and we will definately go back in Summer!
