Aspley Guise may not be the longest course you'll ever play, nor the hardest - but in terms of aesthetic value and course condition there are few better out there. Dubbed 'Little Woburn' because of its lightening fast greens and carpet fairways, it is a course where you get full value for your shots, the fairways are wide on most holes but off the fairways makes holding the greens, or even getting to them in some cases extremly difficult.

The clubs signature hole is the 160 yard 10th, where you play from in front of the club house over a dip of some 100 yards of scrub, to a green well protected by bunkers short and right. It is exposed to the wind and although it maybe an 8-iron to me, many people into the wind will be taking as much as 3-irons off the tee just to try and get it over the scrub. But like so many holes, if you hit a goodun onto the green, you will find yourself with a very makeable birdie putt.

The only downside to the course is the club house, which is planned to be re-developed this November (2002) - which if that comes upto scratch then it would be a very pleasent course. Also, practise facilities for longer irons and drivers are not particularly good - there are nets but they dont give a real indication of how your hitting it. That said - the practise putting green is usually immaculate.

A fair test for golfers at all ages and levels of skills, the 18-hole par 71 undulating parkland course affords fine views of the surrounding countryside.

Two miles west of Junction 13 M1, between Aspley Guise and Woburn Sands.
