I played the Ardglass course during a holiday break in September 2002.

I was struck by the uniqueness of the club-house and its setting beside the sea.

The 1st hole from the back tee requires a drive uphill over about 150 yards of rocks; an easier drive is available from the ordinary tee if you lack confidence!

The tees for the first few holes were all on the cliff edge, giving lovely views along the sea shore. Then there was a great uphill par 5 requiring a stone wall to be negotiated - choose whether to risk it on your 2nd shot, or lay up for your 3rd.

After a few more inland holes, you are then back to the sea-shore alongside the bay, starting with a delightful, but tricky par 3.

Then a few more inland holes back towards the club house - the 16th is a great hole with a raised green. Then the par 3 17th.

The course planner advises you not to be short (bunker), don't go left or right, but definitely don't be long! Very true, I was long and lost my ball in the rough.

A spectacular 18th back towards the club house with the harbour in the back-ground. This is definitely a course not be missed.

A good test of golf on a well maintained course. Don't forget your camera!
